Sealants

A dental sealant is a type of preventive dental treatment that can protect your teeth from decay. Sealants prevent tooth decay by forming a protective barrier on the chewing surface of the tooth. This barrier blocks out the food particles and bacteria that cause tooth decay. The dental sealant also creates a smoother surface over the natural pits and grooves of the tooth, making the tooth easier to keep clean.

We typically recommend dental sealants for children as soon as their permanent back teeth come in (usually between the ages of 6 and 12). The back molars are a common site of decay, and sealants can help to protect them.
